Water
⬜ placeholder · a skeleton only: ask for this method and it reports “not decided yet” · the worked example’s picture has none · the method name and where a person writes it: appendix G
How an artist paints it
Water is a darkened reflection plus ripples: first the reflection of the sky or the bank (its colour darkened by one band, stretched vertically, its edges blurred), then a few horizontal hard-edged bright bands (the lit side of the ripples, wider nearer and denser further away), plus a shadow at the bank; shallow transparent water shows what is under it through opacity. Spray is a white hard-edged shape.
What it looks like in the source
A diffusion model sometimes paints a reflection and sometimes does not; the bright bands are clear and horizontal; and like the sky it is a large gradient.
Our method ⬜
No code. Choosing method="water" passes the parts table and reports “the method for water is not decided yet” when painting starts.
Layers (as envisaged)
Water/: Shape -> _Flat (the reflection’s base gradient) -> _Reflection (the reflection, at an opacity below 1) -> _Light/ (the bright bands) -> _Line (of which there is hardly any).
How a person writes it in
"Water": dict(method="water"), # not decided yet; painting reports it
Criteria
The bright bands’ direction (which should be horizontal), and the 8-level colour count.
What has to be decided
- Where the reflection comes from: copy it when the source has one and draw none when it does not, rather than inventing one by flipping what is above.
- Whether the bright bands are a
lightband or strokes. - How transparency is expressed (opacity, or mixing colours).
On origin
The worked example’s picture has no water.
