Buildings

⬜ placeholder · a skeleton only: ask for this method and it reports “not decided yet” · the worked example’s picture has none · the method name and where a person writes it: appendix G

How an artist paints it

Perspective is settled first and the straight lines are ruled; each face gets one local colour with one band each for the lit and unlit sides (the line where two faces meet is a hard edge); windows and doors are hard-edged dark blocks with a bright line on the frame; and distant buildings are washed out, given less detail and softer edges (aerial perspective). A building has far more lines than a figure, and all of them are straight lines or regular curves.

What it looks like in the source

A diffusion model’s perspective is often inconsistent (the lines do not meet at a point) and its windows are irregularly spaced, while the light and shade on each face is clear. Lineart extractors handle long straight lines well and dense short ones, like window bars, poorly.

Our method ⬜

No code. Choosing method="building" passes the parts table and reports “the method for buildings is not decided yet” when painting starts.

Layers (as envisaged)

One group per building: Shape -> _Flat (one fill per face) -> _Shadow/ (the unlit faces) -> _Window (the dark blocks) -> _Line (the straight lines). Distant buildings are merged into one group.

How a person writes it in

"House": dict(method="building"), # not decided yet; painting reports it

Criteria

Whether the straight lines are straight (flips per 100 px on the line ruler should be near 0), and how hard the edges between faces are.

What has to be decided

  • How the straight lines are extracted (how well a lineart source handles them, and whether a “straight line” candidate source is needed).
  • How the faces are divided (does segmentation give planes or whole buildings, and does a person have to supply the vanishing points).
  • Whether the distance wash belongs to the background page or to this one.
  • Whether a window is a part segmentation produces or a dark block inside the method.

On origin

The worked example’s picture has no buildings.
