Metal and jewellery

⬜ placeholder · a skeleton only: ask for this method and it reports “not decided yet” · the worked example’s picture has none · the method name and where a person writes it: appendix G

How an artist paints it

Metal works by contrast: a hard-edged highlight and a hard-edged dark reflection pressed right against each other, with the local colour only in between; on a curved surface the highlight is a band and on a flat one a patch; and there is a brighter reflection around the edge. A gem is several hard-edged light and dark patches (its facets) plus one highlight point. Jewellery is small and often just a few strokes: one bright band, one dark one, one point.

What it looks like in the source

A diffusion model paints metal with strong contrast and hard edges, distinguishable from fabric; but a small piece of jewellery is only a few pixels at 1x, and segmentation tends to merge it into the part beside it.

Our method ⬜

No code. Choosing method="metal" passes the parts table and reports “the method for metal and jewellery is not decided yet” when painting starts.

Layers (as envisaged)

Metal/: Shape -> _Flat -> _Deep/ (the dark reflection) -> _Light/ (the highlight band and the highlight point) -> _Line.

How a person writes it in

"Brooch": dict(method="metal"), # not decided yet; painting reports it

Criteria

The per-group rulers, and whether the highlight and the dark reflection really are pressed against each other (for a person to look at).

What has to be decided

  • Whether these hard edges belong to a Shape or to strokes.
  • Whether a piece of jewellery only a few pixels across is banded at all, or treated whole as one light point.
  • Whether a reflection’s colour is sampled from its surroundings or fixed.
  • Segmentation: whether jewellery needs a group of its own, and which SAM word.

On origin

The worked example’s picture has no metal or jewellery.
